The following instrument readings, as appropriate to the specific boiler system, need to be taken daily for low-pressure heating boilers and at least once per eight-hour shift for high-pressure boilers. Since this test requires lowering the boiler water to the minimum safe operating level, qualified personnel should use extreme caution. Never allow the water level to drop out of sight in the water gage glass. This test should be done daily for steam boilers operating at more than 15 psig and weekly for those operating at less than 15 psig.
For steam boilers, a daily test of the low-water fuel cutoff device is recommended by CSD-1, which also recommends performing a semiannual slow drain test of the low-water fuel cutoff device. Performing a slow drain test requires caution as the primary low-water fuel cutoff must be jumpered to allow the burner to continue firing after the water level is lowered below the primary low-water fuel cutoff.
